Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born in Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her Aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to become creative and instilled by art. Aunt Denise was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to art literature or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used to engage people. DuVernay had her mother who was conscious of her social status and taught her how to utilize the arts as a means to express her feelings. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was drawn to television journalism during her time as a college student. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was asked to look over the rubbish at the home of one of the jury. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in public relations. DuVernay was hired right after college, as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
